LELAND, NC (WWAY) -- The USS North Carolina got a more than $4,000 donation from the Big Macs for the Battleship promotion Friday morning.

The promotion to donate from sales of Big Macs over Memorial Day weekend was a combined effort of 32 area McDonald's. But the generosity did not end there. Dennis Anderson, the local McDonald's franchise owner, gave a personal gift to the ship of $25,000.

A total of $29,656 is now going toward the Battleship's restoration fund to help repair the aging and rusting hull of the state's World War II memorial.

Capt. Terry Bragg, Executive Director of the Battleship, says McDonald's has been a true partner in supporting the generation campaign.

"They have helped us with advertising and marketing, as well as a cash gift," Bragg said. "That shows that our values of supporting those who gave their service and commitment, as well as the 40,000 school kids who visit the Battleship North Carolina, is important."

Bragg says the USS North Carolina is known as the people's ship, which is why it is so important for everyone to contribute to the project.
